Leading in the next era of corporate sustainability

At Unilever Pakistan, we are committed to delivering consistent, competitive business performance. However, we cannot operate in isolation from the world around us. The past decade has been marked by extraordinary global events, giving rise to complex, interconnected challenges that continue to shape the environment in which we do business.

Climate change, nature degradation, plastic pollution, and rising inequality pose significant risks, not only to society, but to businesses as well. At the same time, our stakeholders are evolving. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the impact of their choices, seeking to align their spending with their values. Regulatory expectations are also rising, with businesses being asked to disclose more and demonstrate measurable action.

Accelerating Sustainable Delivery Through Accountability

We believe businesses have a responsibility and every reason to address these challenges, and Unilever has been doing so for over a decade.

Our first era of sustainability journey began in 2009 with the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP), an era focused on raising ambition and setting long-term goals for the industry. As the USLP concluded in 2020, we recognized the need to embed sustainability more deeply into business strategy, marking the start of our second era, guided by the Compass strategy.

We have now entered a third era: one focused on accelerating delivery, driving greater impact, and making sustainability progress integral to business performance. Guided by our Growth Action Plan (GAP) 2030, we are sharpening our focus, doing fewer things, doing them better, and prioritizing the areas most material to our business and where we can create the greatest impact.

In Pakistan, this means concentrating our efforts across four key pillars: Climate, Nature, Plastics, and Livelihoods, addressing the environmental and social realities most relevant to the country, while contributing to Unilever's global sustainability ambition.

Our Growth Action Plan addresses these challenges head-on. In the coming years, our focus will be on four sustainability priorities.

Climate

Unilever has cut 95% of emissions from its operations

Unilever Pakistan now runs on 97% renewable electricity, cutting operational emissions by 95% since 2015 from our factories and powers we buy, primarily through our transition to renewable energy and energy efficiency programs. Unilever Pakistan believes that our operational emissions are within our direct control and takes full responsibility to decrease these effects.

Nature

Our responsibility to save water: The Water Stewardship Program

Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. Unilever Pakistan's Water Stewardship Program is working to replenish 192.5 million litres of water every year, through watercourse lining, recharge wells, and community awareness on responsible water use.

Plastics

We collect and process 100% of the plastic we sell

A wrapper can only be recycled if someone actually collects, and for packaging to be reusable and recyclable, effective collection and processing systems must exist first. We're investing in that collection system so plastic stays in use, not in the ocean or a landfill.

Livelihoods

Unilever’s effort to equal and improved distribution of income for its employees

What started as support during COVID has grown into a bigger commitment, helping improve the lives of over 21,000 people connected to Unilever Pakistan, from our employees to the wider people in our value chain. A fair wage means a family can cover rent, school fees, and food without struggling through work that is secure and fair.

How Unilever Pakistan is giving plastic a second life
